Policy Mission

Seniors who built Ward 5 deserve to age with dignity, security, and access to the services they need. We will protect senior housing, support in-home health assistance from family members, housing improvement subsidies, and create vibrant senior programming across all neighborhoods.

Community Concern

Ward 5 is home to a significant and growing senior population, many of whom are long-term homeowners and renters facing rising costs, limited mobility options, and shrinking access to social services. Many Ward 5 seniors are at risk of displacement, isolation, and inadequate healthcare and supportive care access.

Policy Priorities

Aging in Place

Expand DC’s Home Repair Program (HRP) funding to help Ward 5 seniors maintain their homes and yards safely
Advocate for more in-home care (personal care and home health aides) slots for Ward 5 seniors, regardless of income requirements
Support the creation of a Ward 5 Senior Home Modification Program for wheelchair accessibility and fall prevention systems

Senior Centers & Programming

Invest in upgrading and expanding programming at Ward 5 senior wellness centers
Partner with DPR and DACL to expand fitness, nutrition, social activities, and virtual wellness opportunities
Create a Ward 5 Senior Technology Literacy Initiative to combat digital isolation and digital crime victimization

Transportation & Mobility

Find transportation solutions similar to the old DC Circulator and paratransit options for seniors in Fort Lincoln, Michigan Park, and Langdon
Advocate for expanded DC MetroAccess eligibility criteria and response time improvements
Advocate for community-based transportation solutions for emergencies and health-related transportation needs

Senior Economic Security

Support Senior Property Tax Relief program awareness campaigns in Ward 5
Partner with AARP DC to host annual Senior Benefits Enrollment fairs in Ward 5
Advocate for elder financial abuse protections and Legal Aid Services
Create workforce development opportunities for retired seniors who can still work and need employment
